People procrastinate when asked to think in the abstract

TO SOME there is nothing so urgent that it cannot be postponed in favour of a cup of tea. Such procrastination is a mystery to psychologists, who wonder why people would sabotage themselves in this way. A team of researchers led by Sean McCrea of the University of Konstanz, in Germany, reckon they have found a piece of the puzzle. People act in a timely way when given concrete tasks but dawdle when they view them in abstract terms.

2004 0816讀奇境奇字:lallygag和筆記

人生有些時候,所讀的書特別有味道。台灣很早就有CONFESSIONS OF AN ADVERTISING MAN by David Ogilvy 的翻譯本(晨鐘出版社?),不過我可能沒讀過。

80年代中期,有一回從美國回來的途中,選讀的是 Ogilvy on Advertising by David Ogilvy 。

A Forest Full of Surprises,翻譯成「歡樂林」,似乎有點奇怪。除了記朋友,還有Favourite Words, RECIPES. Customers.

這位夢想受勳變成Sir David的Favourite Words,我們當然可能一字都認不得。昨天我研究「.abecedary/字母」,發現《廣告大師奧格威—未公諸於世的選集》第50頁有解。
今天的運氣也不差:
由rl每日一字 flaneur(閒逛的)想到 lallygag pronunciation ,沒想到日文解釋中有一義為" 頰之愛撫"( 頬を愛撫する)。

'lallygag' is one of preferred word of David Oglivy.
But some one translate it into. 閒逛的—hc: 錯,原譯「游手好閒」。

問他意見Please advise what you know about lallygag.【 rl 2004-08-17

因為趕稿暫時無暇細思量,此字為動詞,例中譯作形容詞應屬不宜,至於漢譯,則兩者皆對,也就是說,它可以用來表示無所事事或縱慾方面的動作。 】

hc 查The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth EditionYahoo ,都說它與 flaneur意思近似:To waste time by puttering aimlessly; dawdle. ETYMOLOGY: Origin unknown.

Dawdle字義: 1.To take more time than necessary: dawdled through breakfast.
2. To move aimlessly or lackadaisically: dawdling on the way to work.】

dawdle
verb [I]
to do something or go somewhere very slowly, taking more time than is necessary:
Stop dawdling! You'll be late for school!

lallygag Variant of lollygag.

難道此字為一pun?
小讀者留言【謝謝小讀者之資料。】:
LALLYGAG midC19 [English] (v) ~ To kiss and cuddle.
A Dictionary of Slang and Euphemism, Richard Spears, informs that lallygag/lollygag has an older meaning of "to flirt, court, or make love" (mid-1800s), and a more current meaning of "to be idle" (1900s). The same source reveals the slang term, "ladies' lollipop." (British, jocular, 1800s).

Proverbs 30:28New International Version (NIV)

28 a lizard can be caught with the hand,
yet it is found in kings’ palaces.

Proverbs 30:28New King James Version (NKJV)

28 The spider[a] skillfully grasps with its hands,
And it is in kings’ palaces.

Footnotes:

  1. Proverbs 30:28 Or lizard

思高聖經
    四種精靈小動物
  1. 地上的小動物中,有四種極其聰明:
  2. 螞蟻是無力的一群,卻在夏日儲備食糧;
  3. 岩貍是無能的一群,卻在岩石中築巢穴;
  4. 蝗虫雖然沒有君王,卻知一齊列隊出發;
  5. 壁虎能用手來捕捉,卻經常出入於皇宮。

‘Service Fees’「以數謀利」;exhort 敦促 ;“being investigated.”為「正依規依紀進行立案審查」;undergo criticism sessions 開展了民主生活會

Chinese Statistics Bureau Investigated Over ‘Service Fees’
By MICHAEL FORSYTHE April 29, 2016

報告稱中國國家統計局官員「以數謀利」
傅才德 2016年4月29日
http://cn.nytimes.com/china/20160429/c29chinagraft/dual/

The investigation of the statistics bureau took place from late October to December last year, and Mr. Wang was removed from his post shortly thereafter. Party cadres in the bureau had to undergo criticism sessions — a tried and true method of enforcing discipline in the party — with the goal of making them “red-faced and sweating,” the report said.

對國家統計局的調查是在去年10月底到12月間進行的。不久後,王保安被免職。報告稱,國家統計局的黨員幹部開展了民主生活會——這種加強黨紀的方法久經考驗,被證明是可靠的——相互批評,目的是讓參加者「臉紅出汗」。

此篇似乎有些中共特別用語的英譯,如標題 ‘Service Fees’「以數謀利」。 “being investigated.”為「正依規依紀進行立案審查」。
exhort
verb [T to infinitive] FORMAL 勸告、勸勉、敦促

 " undergo criticism sessions",翻譯成" 開展了民主生活會",是"中共內行話",外國人很難進入"狀況"。

Time Out of Joint

1998年的經典電影─《楚門的世界》The Truman Show,由喜劇泰斗,金凱瑞所飾演主角─楚門。

プロットは1959年のフィリップ・K・ディックの小説『時は乱れて』(Time Out of Joint)からいくつもアイデアを拝借しているという。

Time Out of Joint
Time Out of Joint is a dystopian novel by Philip K. Dick, first published in novel form in the United States in 1959.
The title is a reference to the line uttered by Hamlet to Horatio after being visited by his father's ghost and learning that his uncle Claudius murdered his father; in short, a shocking supernatural event that fundamentally alters the way Hamlet perceives the state and the universe ("The time is out of joint; O cursed spite!/That ever I was born to set it right!" [I.V.211-2]), much as do several events in the novel.

科普名著中的莎士比亞Othello的Desdemona's Willow Song

科普名著中的莎士比亞Othello的Desdemona's Willow Song

謹以此文紀念莎士比亞過世400年。

MR TOMPKINS IN WONDERLAND MR TOMPKINS EXPLORES THE ATOM

By GEORGE GAMOW

這是兩本1940年代科普名著的合訂本。
台灣在1968年由徐氏基金會出版,浦慕明譯

【湯普金夢遊記:近代物理探奇】, Gamow著,浦慕明譯/徐氏基金會

其實,科普名著中多文化常識,翻譯需註解。當時的翻譯比較"粗",譬如說第6章
6 Cosmic Opera 翻譯成"宇宙劇",章中有幾首作者夫人幫忙譜寫的歌---尚未考察翻譯,所以這是"宇宙歌劇"。

末段加註*談莎士比亞名著Othello 的【楊柳歌】,這在西方文化是常識,不過中文讀者可能都不知所云,所以必須加註。

*A fortnight before the publication dale of the first printing of this hook there appeared an article by F. Hoyle entitled: “Recent Developments in Cosmology” (Nature, Oct. 9, 1965, p. in). Hoyle writes: “Ryle and his associates have counted radio sources . . . The indication of that radio count is that the Universe was more dense in the past than it is today.” The author has decided, however, not to change the lines of the arias of “Cosmic Opera” since, once written, operas become classic. In fact, even today Desdemona sings a beautiful aria before she dies, after being strangled by Othello.

幸虧現在資訊發達,Wikipedia 有專條說明,YouTube至少有兩種唱法。哼的方式較合乎劇情。
