今日重讀朱先生翻譯,有點"慘不忍睹",散文不理想。

朱生豪譯.....我的好大人!上帝祝服您老人家!我很高興看到您老人家到外邊來走走;我聽說您老人家有病;我希望您老人家是聽從醫生的勸告才到外面來走動走動的。您老人家雖說還沒有完全度過青春時代,可是總也算上了點年紀了,有那麼點老氣橫秋的味道。我要恭恭.敬敬地勸告您老人家務必多多注意您的健康。..
some smack of age in you, some relish of the saltness of time 僅譯為”老氣橫秋的味道”似乎漏譯或為成語所困。

oad by advice. Your lordship, though not clean past your youth, hath yet some smack of age in you, some relish of the saltness of time; and I must humbly beseech your lordship to have a reverent care of your health."

turn the People's Republic into a pariah

......值得一提的是,(FT)社論指出,由於中國近年來不斷對台施壓,且不放棄武力威脅,其他各國應該思考如何協助台灣,應對中國強調若以武力進犯台灣,中國將成為一個賤民國家( to resolve the situation through invasion would turn the People's Republic into a pariah. )。

hc淺見請參考:
此處a pariah 指的是中共將成為國際社會所唾棄的、所隔絕的"國家"。

pariah

(pə-rī'əpronunciation
n.
  1. A social outcast: "Shortly Tom came upon the juvenile pariah of the village, Huckleberry Finn, son of the town drunkard" (Mark Twain).
  2. An Untouchable.
[Tamil paṛaiyar, pl. of paṛaiyan, pariah caste, from paṛai, festival drum.]
WORD HISTORY The word pariah, which can be used for anyone who is a social outcast, independent of social position, recalls a much more rigid social system, which made only certain people pariahs. The caste system of India placed pariahs, also known as Untouchables, very low in society. The word pariah, which we have extended in meaning, came into English from Tamil paṛaiyar, the plural of paṛaiyan, the caste name, which literally means "(hereditary) drummer" and comes from the word paṛai, the name of a drum used at certain festivals. The word is first recorded in English in 1613. Its use in English and its extension in meaning probably owe much to the long period of British rule in India.

A dying culture destroys everything it touches.
Language is one of the first things to go.
Nobody really communicates with words anymore. Words have lost their emotional impact, intimacy, ability to shock and make love. Language prevents communication.

One word which has maintained its emotional power and purity. Amerika cannot destroy it because she dare not use it.

...that book first ran in The New Yorkers double issue of April 28 and May 5, 1997, under the title “The Romeo File.” Here’s Garton Ash describing the uncanny experience of looking through his file:
There are incredibly detailed reports on me from the Stasi’s informers, and minute-by-minute descriptions of what I was doing on a particular day…. There are also summaries of material from files on my German friends and on people at the British Embassy, photocopies of articles I wrote about Poland, and copies of pages from my own notebooks, photocopied during a secret search of my luggage at Schönefeld airport. In all, there are three hundred and twenty-five pages. They transport me back in memory more than any madeleine. _

我對於obliged to do it 的翻譯不滿意:
中國國家主席習近平2月初「告台灣同胞書」發表40週年紀念會上重申「九二共識、一個中國」、提出「一國兩制」台灣方案等5項對台原則。蘇格蘭報章 The National 報道,英國保守黨前主席、前港督彭定康回應習近平言論時指出,「在人類歷史上,沒有民主體制會同意加入獨裁體制的一部分,除非是被迫。(There isn't in human history an example of a democracy agreeing to become part of a tyranny without being obliged to do it)」

Mr. Saramago loved to tell a story of how he came by his surname. His real family name was de Sousa. But when, as a 7-year-old boy, he showed up for his first day of school and presented his birth certificate, it was discovered that the clerk in his home village had registered him as José Saramago. “Saramago,” which means “wild radish,” a green that country people were obliged to eat in hard times, was the insulting nickname by which the novelist’s father was known.
“My father wasn’t very happy, but if that was his son’s official name, well, then he too had to take it,” he recounted in the 2007 interview. The family remained so poor, Mr. Saramago recalled in his memoir, that every spring his mother pawned their blankets, hoping that she might be able to redeem them by the following winter.
