Dæmon is the Latin word for the Ancient Greek daimōn (δαίμων: “god”, “godlike”, “power”, “fate”) [1] which refers to the daemons of ancient Greek religion andmythology; and of Hellenistic religion and philosophy.[2]

代蒙（希臘文：δαίμων、拉丁文：Dæmon、英文：Daemon）是希臘神話中的一種介於神與人之間的精靈或妖魔。它們與神祇的區別在於精靈並不具有人的外貌，而是一種善惡並存的超自然存在。在羅馬神話中，代蒙稱為革尼烏斯（Genius）。
特徵代蒙無處不在，伴隨著人的一生。古希臘人把許多不能理解的破壞性的自然現象歸罪於代蒙的惡作劇，比如水災、火災、旱災、雪崩、山體滑坡、泥石流、地震、龍捲風、暴風雨、漲潮、瘟疫等等。荷馬認為，代蒙對人是無益也是無害的，分為正邪兩種，既有專門保護人的，也有專門害人的，有時也會被視為敵視人類的存在，它們使人發瘋，使人變成瞎子或聾子。
根據古希臘唯心主義哲學派的解釋，人一生下來一直到死亡都有代蒙伴隨並支配他的一切行動。
自從奧林匹斯神系教派被後來的宗教排擠之後，對代蒙的信仰還保持了很長一段時間。後來基督教則把一切異教神靈統稱為代蒙。代蒙一詞與惡魔（Demon、Devil-mon）的意思基本相同。
