We all know that words have the power to hurt or heal; did you know they also helped put a man on the moon? On May 25, 1961, President John F. Kennedy delivered a historic speech before a joint session of Congress, in which he challenged the United States to take a leading role in space exploration, including a manned mission to the moon. His speech pushed forward a decade-long American aerospace campaign, which culminated in the 1969 Apollo Project. Kennedy said, “while we cannot guarantee that we shall one day be first, we can guarantee that any failure to make this effort will make us last.”
