Emma (Jane Austen )

Contemporary scholars have reappraised “dear Aunt Jane” as an independent and worldly-wise woman who wielded a sardonic pen. She was no prude, but she had high standards and a mortal fear of childbirth. The author died on July 18th 1817

'Surprises are foolish things. The pleasure is not enhanced, and the inconvenience is often considerable.' - Emma
Jane Austen died on this day in 1817 in Winchester, England.

Today marks the 199th anniversary of the death of English novelistJane Austen, who died at the relatively young age of 41 after publishing four novels. (Her final two, NORTHANGER ABBEY and PERSUASION, were published posthumously.) Austen was little-known during her lifetime, and it was only decades after her death that critics began to give her the respect she still commands today.

Adventures of a Bystander by Peter Ferdinand Drucker ,1993重新發行;廖月娟譯,台北:Mc-Graw Hill與聯經出版社, 1996)之「新版序」。

They are to be found on every suburban street. Not one of them would behave much differently today. And yet, individually and collectively they conveyed--as could neither historian nor statistician-(這字原書可能有誤?這史家與統計師,中文本未譯)--the reality, the feel, the meaning of early nineteen century England and its so very different 'quality of life'..)
