不過我讀他的傳記發現
他是德裔移民諳德語可是竟對哥德的作品隻字不提 簡直不可思議
他的回信說哥德的確是對德語民族有極大影響 他最近在看他的義大利遊記 之所以不談哥德 主要是不喜歡他從事科學時的業餘精神

我在他過世後的打油詩之一提到他與芝加哥大學的Becker和Stigler兩人就品味問題的幽默問答非所問（分別轉經濟學論文）
在 美國cmu開紀念會的時候 我讀到名藝術史家E. H. Gombrich 寫書評The Whirligig of taste（評牛津大學Haskell 的著作）舉哥德長壽中品味的轉換（他年青時是偶像破壞者 及長成保守者 成熟後也能欣賞gothic畫和romanesque relief ）中的一首詩，貢布里希自己給予他簡易的大意
But how can ever Jan Eyck/ By Phidas's side be set?/ Take my advice: The one to like/you must the other forget/ If you have always love the same/ could still your heart be set aflame?/Such is the world, and such is Art/ that pleasures comes as pleasures part
