本生音譯作闍多伽、闍陀，《成實論》卷一說：「闍陀伽者，因現在事說過去事。」本生經是九分教和十二分教之一。有些故事散見於各類巴利文經典中。敦煌石窟刻有大量的本生故事，如：毗楞竭梨王身釘千釘、九色鹿拯救溺人、月光王施頭。
