La Peau de chagrin (French pronunciation: [la po də ʃaɡʁɛ̃]The Skin of Sorrow or The Wild Ass's Skin) is an 1831 novel by Frenchnovelist and playwright Honoré de Balzac (1799–1850). Set in early 19th-century Paris, it tells the story of a young man who finds a magic piece of shagreen that fulfills his every desire. For each wish granted, however, the skin shrinks and consumes a portion of his physical energy. La Peau de chagrin belongs to the Études philosophiques group of Balzac's sequence of novelsLa Comédie humaine...

Honoré de Balzac has long appealed to English readers: though Wilkie Collins could lament in 1859 that "he is little known because he is little translated." However, by the end of the 19th century there had appeared three different translations of his works in English.
"Hatred is a tonic, it makes one live, it inspires vengeance; but pity kills, it makes our weakness weaker."

MASTERS OF PHOTOGRAPHY

Chang Chao-Tang's Photography

By Giuseppe Santagata · On 31/10/2017

"I try to capture the moment in which the true and the unreal are met, a sort of uncomfortable encounter between alienation and uncertainty."

The influence of Chang Chao-Tang (張照 堂) extends beyond its own photographic practice. Considered as the most representative photographer in the Taiwanese history, Chang has co-wrote mentor and curator for many young photographers of the island.

Since taking up his artistic activity in photography at the end of the 1950s, Chang contributed and influenced the Taiwanese photographic scene with its unlimited creativity, unique perspectives and heritage of cultural paradigms. Born in Panchao City, Taiwan in 1943, Chang Chao-Tang began photographing from high school with a Aires Automat 120.

Known for its black and white images capturing street scenes, reflecting a strange and absurd reality in daily life, Chang Chao-Tang has been deeply inspired by western artistic movements such as surrealism, existentialism, and absurd theater . The Taiwanese photographer's pictures translate these beliefs into Chinese ideology.

Blurred images with decapitated figures, indistinct facial characters that seem to be lost in landscapes, visual metaphors of oppression and the political suffocation that the country was experimenting with. Chang Chao-Tang's images cross over, in fact, the period known as White Terror, which encloses the 38-year martial law (1949-1987) imposed by Chinese Kuomintang, during which thousands of intellectuals and citizens were imprisoned, and some even shot, for political offenses.

The pictures of the Taiwanese photographer make themselves known of this desolate sense of drama surrounding the life of the island. His images reveal transcendence in the middle of the common, intimacy in the midst of alienation, humor in the midst of absurdity. A visual proclamation of uncertainty, of returning to self, a nihilistic statement of being in the world.

Chang Chao-Tang's formal black and white attention returns simple and powerful images that give rise to doubts rather than answers. Suffocated bodies and bodies, immersed in vacuity and infertility, but always illuminated by a lyrical and subversive vision.

Recipient of many important awards, including Golden Bell (1976), National Art Prize (1999) and National Culture Award (2011), Chang Chao-Tang had his first great retrospective exhibition at Taipei Fine Art Museum, in 2013.

Chang Chao-Tang has curated exhibitions and taught photography and film. He has organized, edited and written numerous books from Taiwanese photographers. With irreproachable dedication, he worked to promote photography within Taiwan's cultural landscape.

The most recent work by Taiwanese photographer is a series of imaginations of post-nuclear landscapes, in response to growing fears about the security of Taiwan's nuclear power plants.
