All this sunshine makes us want to dance like the main subject in Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s 19th-century marvel
One of the largest and most elaborate paintings Toulouse-Lautrec ever created, “Marcelle Lender Dancing the Bolero,” depicts the French operetta “Chilpéric” in which Lautrec’s muse, Marcelle Lender, performed at the Théâtre des Variétés in 1895 Paris. She dominates the center of the composition. Dressed in a costume composed of jet black juxtaposed with bright complementary shades of red and green. Her frame is rendered in strong, graceful lines.
He sketched the actress frequently, ultimately producing several paintings and lithographs inspired by her appearance in the performance – including this monumental canvas. Yet, Toulouse-Lautrec's admiration was not reciprocated. "What a horrible man!" Lender is said to have remarked. "He is very fond of me…. But as for the portrait you can have it!"
