" 胡适有三子。长子祖望，出生在1919年3月16日，距胡适母丧仅四个月，取名“祖望”有望祖的意思；次女素斐，出生于1920年8月16日，不幸在 1925年5月早夭；幼子思杜，出生在1921年12月17日，这天正好也是胡适的生日，取名“思杜”是为了表示对恩师美国哲学家杜威的感激之情。"
