picturesque;Ludovico Magno by “Porte Saint-Denis,”

And this caused the people, whose good sense does not perceive so much
refinement in things, and likes to translate _Ludovico Magno_ by “Porte
Saint-Denis,” to give to this dark, gloomy, damp cavity, the name of
“The Rat-Hole.” An explanation less sublime, perhaps, than the other;
but, on the other hand, more picturesque.

The main arch is flanked by obelisks applied to the wall face bearing sculptural groups of trophies of arms. Above the main arch, the southern face carries a sculptural group by Michel Anguier of "The Passage of the Rhine" in a sunk panel, while the north face carries allegorical figures of the Rhine and the Netherlands. The entablature bears the gilded bronze inscription LUDOVICO MAGNO, "To Louis the Great". Two smaller pedestrian walkways were built through the obelisk pedestals but they have now been closed.

36 Hours in Orlando, Fla.

By SHAILA DEWAN
Beyond the theme parks, gator farms and citrus groves of Orlando, there are plentiful options that include museums, picturesque lakes, dive bars and gastro-pubs.

Two decades ago, children paddled boats on the lake, families enjoyed picnics, and Mr Hun Sen used to entertain foreign visitors at a modest but picturesque bamboo restaurant. But today, as the bulldozers are poised to raze old Phnom Penh and plug its favourite lake, the urban poor are starting to feel nostalgic for a time when a park really was a park and not a so-called “state-private development zone”.

  • John Ruskin identified the "picturesque" as a genuinely modern aesthetic category, in The Seven Lamps of Architecture.
