Wuthering Heights和 Bleak House by Charles Dickens:《荒涼山莊》/長江文藝

Bleak House by Charles Dickens 翻譯成《荒涼山莊》是否恰當?
Wikipedia《荒涼山莊》(英語Bleak House),或譯為《蕭齋》,英國作家狄更斯所著小說,發表於1852年至1853年之間,是狄更斯最長的作品之一。
Bleak House不太像是山莊:
山莊山中或鄉下僻靜的別墅。南朝齊˙謝朓˙賽敬亭山廟喜雨詩:「胡寧昧千里,解珮拂山莊。」唐˙劉禹錫˙送周使君罷渝州歸郢州別墅詩:「野戍岸邊留畫舸,綠蘿陰下到山莊。」



咆哮山莊》(英語:Wuthering Heights),世界文學名著,英國文學家艾蜜莉·勃朗特(Emily Brontë)的唯一的一部小說。

日譯的嵐,似乎也有問題:『嵐が丘』(あらしがおか、原題:Wuthering Heights)は、エミリー・ブロンテの唯一の長編小説。

荒涼館』(こうりょうかん、Bleak House)は、チャールズ・ディケンズの長編小説1852年3月から1853年9月にかけて、月々20回に分けて分冊のかたちで刊行されたものである。物語の大筋は、ヴィクトリア朝の腐敗した訴訟制度や倒錯した慈善事業、ひいては社会全体を批判的に描いたものである。探偵小説の一面もある。



台灣採用:由於篇幅問題,相比其他狄更斯的小說,本書譯本很少。在大陸,上海譯文出版社出版過黃邦傑等多人合譯的版本。

這次買本新譯版《荒涼山莊》(Bleak House by Charles Dickens/長江文藝/2009/65萬字/56元。
此書甚至不像其他叢書:請專家寫導讀。其實他們有旅英的學者的博士論文就是寫此書/她年前希望我用英文寫CD在台灣/我放棄/因為台灣的CD學不彰)
妙的是,此書中無一原文,又無注解,這不可能是天書嗎?

Charles Dickens mentioned Temple Bar in Book II, Chapter I of A Tale of Two Cities, noting its proximity to Tellson's Bank, also on Fleet Street. This was in fact Child & Co which used the upper rooms of the Bar as storage space. While critiquing the moral poverty of late-18th century London, Dickens wrote that in matters of crime and punishment, "putting to death was a recipe much in vogue," and illustrated the horror caused by severed heads, "exposed on Temple Bar with an insensate brutality and ferocity..."

Q. Why are snowflakes usually perfectly symmetrical? How does one arm “know” how the other arms are growing?
A. “The growth of a snowflake is sensitive to its immediate environment, especially the temperature and humidity,” said Kenneth G. Libbrecht, chairman of the physics department at the California Institute of Technology, who maintains a websiteexplaining snow crystals. “It might take a half-hour for the crystal to reach its final size, and during that time it could travel a mile or more, experiencing ever-changing conditions.
“If you look at an individual arm, its shape reflects the exact history of its travels,” he said. “But the six arms all travel together, so they all experience the same history. Thus they appear to grow in synchrony, even though no arm ‘knows’ how the others are growing.”
Dr. Libbrecht compared the process to going outside on a cold day, wearing a heavy coat and seeing everyone else wearing one as well, without foreknowledge or consultation.
“The flip side of this story is that no two snowflakes follow exactly the same path in the turbulent atmosphere, and this is why no two snowflakes are exactly alike,” he said.
“Finally, snowflakes are in fact not usually perfectly symmetrical,” he said, “although snowflake photographers like to select the ones that are.” Large, beautifully symmetrical crystals are actually quite rare, he said, but “as with people, the most attractive snowflakes tend to get the most attention.”
