緣起：hc在2004/5/15介紹A. Waley的漢譯英之觀摩，由於讀到潘震澤兄寫的：
「除了華生的「雙螺旋」之外，克立克也出版過自傳「瘋狂的追求」（What Mad Pursuit﹐1988）；不過他只用了一章簡短介紹該發現的經過，未像華生一樣大作文章。……」
我在2004/5/18 給他郵件：
【hc comments一時找不到大陸What Mad Pursuit的翻譯本。書名為莎士比亞引言。查專書mad在莎士比亞作品當形容詞至少有四義，所以直譯很不理想。
Extravagant; immoderate. ``Be mad and merry.'' --Shak.
``Fetching mad bounds.'' --Shak. 】
***其一：
這mad字眼，讓我想起Waley談話錄：『山林狂歌記』（書名由hc暫譯。原著：Arthur Waley in Conversation, (ed.) Ivan Morris. Madly Singing in the Mountains, 1970）
【<<教育部 國語辭典>> 狂歌：縱情高歌。唐˙白居易˙狂歌詞：勸君酒杯滿，聽我狂歌詞。三國演義˙第三十六回：庶故作狂歌於市，以動使君；幸蒙不棄，即賜重用。】
這有讓我聯想到去年比較過兩本書的翻譯質量：Michael Ignatieff《柏林傳》(Isaiah Berlin: A Life) （羅妍莉譯 南京:譯林2001/9(月)出版） vs. Michael Ignatieff《他鄉:以撒•柏林傳》(Isaiah Berlin: A Life) （高毅 高煜譯 台北:立緒2001/1 出版）
「我並沒有從頭到尾逐一對照讀(當初目的可不是為了寫這方面的東西 而且這種”審判法”太沒趣味 可能只有了不起的胡適先生才樂意做 所以這種抽樣是優偏差的(biased work sampling)
有時候，求”質量保證”之前，先要求”數量”上的保證。
翻譯作品的讀者，幾乎很難發現漏譯，因為這本事要有”超乎文本”的想像力才行 然而，這種錯誤的嚴重性，即，對原作和所有”利害關係人”的”欺騙” ，”可能”高於種種誤譯。
高(立緒)譯本至少有三處漏譯 ，漏譯其一為：
白居易的”詠老贈夢得”還原—我懷疑原詩為A. Waley所翻譯。

與君俱老也，自問老何如。眼澀夜先臥，頭慵朝未梳。 有時扶杖出，盡日閉門居。懶照新磨鏡，休看小字書。 情於故人重，跡共少年疏。唯是閒談興，相逢尚有餘。(第391-92頁)

「詠老贈夢得」
與君俱老也， We are growing old together, you and I:
自問老何如。 Let us ask ourselves, what is age like?
眼澀夜先臥， The idle head, still uncomed at noon.
頭慵朝未梳。 Propped on a staff, sometimes a walk abroad;
有時扶杖出， Or all day sitting with closed doors.
盡日閉門居。
懶照新磨鏡， One dares not look in the mirror’s polished face;
休看小字書。 One cannot read small-letter books.
情於故人重， Deeper and deeper, one’s love of old friends;
跡共少年疏。 Fewer and fewer, one’s dealings with young maen.
唯是閒談興， One thing only, the pleasure of idle talk,
相逢尚有餘。 Is great as ever, when you and I meet?
HC說明： 英詩出處為Isaiah Berlin: A Life ，pp.287-88，其中「眼澀夜先臥」沒英譯，無法判斷究竟是Isaiah Berlin: A Life的錯或是原英譯者的錯。
2003年案:：高譯本「九世紀」印為”十九世紀”。:這首由柏林之好友Spender在晚年所送的詩，原著並未標示出處。羅譯本經高手找出來：我猜， 唐詩英譯的其實不多，著名的Arthur Waley更有白居易的專著（書名待查，記得中央圖書館有此書）。 又，據原作：『我跟斯彭德(Stephen Spender)是同代人，他是我最要好的朋友之一，我終生都瞭解他。還在牛津讀書的時候他就寫出很漂亮的詩篇。』 所以，白樂天不朽……」
***其二：
約1917年 著名詩人T. S. Elliot、E. Pound和 a. Waley每周一晚有雅集，討論詩歌。Waley認為中國詩的「把語義停留在行尾」之方式，多少改變友人的作詩方式。
***其三：
「君子周而不比，小人比而不周。」（《論語˙為政》）A. Waley 英譯本之中譯：「君子能夠毫無偏見地從所有側面考察某個問題【周】，小人之所以懷有偏見因為他只是從某一個側面考察問題【比】。」當然，這種解釋的側重點是在知性思想方面。……道德氣質傾向來解釋。

<<教育部 國語辭典>>《何晏˙集解》：「忠信為周，阿黨為比。言行忠信，不結黨營私。」
《論語˙為政》：君子周而不比，小人比而不周。《何晏˙集解》：忠信為周，阿黨為比。言行忠信，不結黨營私。《元˙馬致遠˙陳摶高臥˙第三折》：陛下道君子周而不比，貧道呵小人窮斯濫矣《元˙馬致遠˙陳摶高臥˙第三折》：「陛下道君子周而不比，貧道呵小人窮斯濫矣。」
****其四：
《 老子‧四一章 》 云：「上士聞道，勤而行之；中士聞道，若存若亡；下士聞道大笑之，不笑不足以為道。」
Waley先生的翻譯為：
When the man of highest capacities hears Tao
He does his best to put it into practices.
When the man of middling capacities hears Tao
He is in two minds about it.
When the man of low capacities hears Tao
He laugh loudly at it.
