胡適在1942年2月17日給趙元任的信：

我匆匆出門，作八千英里的旅行，── 他們叫做 Grand Circle Tour ──動機是加拿大政府要我在Vancouver 幫他們作一次 Victory Loan 的演說。但是我有近兩年，沒有到西岸了，所以借此到西岸各大城去一遭，到了洛杉磯，然後東歸。，

你的字典樣本，我竟沒能細讀。只好等我回去時再回信了。

在這裏我要請教你一件小事。我在二十年前曾翻譯波斯詩人Omar 的「絕句」一章。當時本是「借他人的酒杯，澆自己的塊壘」，譯文雖然有人愛讀 ── 因為文章通順，音節響亮，── 但是很不正確。原文是：

O love! Could you and I with Him conspire

To grasp this Sorry Scheme of Things entire,

Would we not shatter it to bits, and Then

Remould it nearer to the heart’s desire!

我的舊譯文是：(胡頌平注：譯題《希望》，參閱民國八年二月二十八日條。)

要是天公換了卿和我，

該把這糊塗(後改糟糕) (最後改寒傖)世界一齊打破，

再團再煉再調和，

好依著你我的安排，

把這世界重新造過。

前些時，一天晚上睡不著，我把這首詩改翻了，開了電燈，記在一個本子上，才睡了。後來周鯁生看了這新譯本，說是比舊譯好得多了。我把這稿子抄給你看，請你不客氣的修改，請你注意修改兩方面：一是白話的文法和「習慣」(idiom) ，二是音節。還有第三方面，就是譯文的正確程度。

倘使偺(們)倆能和老天爺打成一氣，

好教偺抓住了這整個兒天和地，

偺可不先要打破了這不成樣子的東西，

再從頭改造翻新，好教偺(？)真個稱心如意！

這時候翻譯「莪馬」當然還是「借他人的酒杯，澆自己的塊壘」呵！

在改詩工作上，你府上還有韵卿和四位小姐，他們都能幫我改白話。

適之卅一、二、十七

因為寫這首詩的第一句，我想起三百年前一支地道的民歌，地道的老百姓的革命歌。這是我在一部清朝小說《豆棚閒話》裏發現的，據說是明末流寇時代最流行的一支民歌。我現在抄給你，盼望你能給他作個曲譜：

老天爺你年紀大，

耳又聾來眼又花，

你看不見人聽不見話！，

殺人放火的享盡榮華，

吃素看經的活活餓殺！

老天爺你不會做天，

你塌了罷！

「昔為倡家女，今為蕩子婦。蕩子行不歸，空床難獨守。」(2-3世紀古詩之末四句)

「何不策高足，先據要路津？無為久(守)貧賤，轗軻長苦辛。」可謂淫鄙之尤。然無視為淫詞、鄙詞者，以其真也。五代、北宋之大詞人亦然，非無淫詞，讀之者但覺其親切動人；非無鄙詞，但覺其精力彌滿。可知淫詞與鄙詞之病，非淫與鄙之病，而游詞之病也。「豈不爾思，室是遠而。」而子曰：「未之思也，夫何遠之有？」惡其游也。

《人間詞話‧六十二》上文的黑體字為日文本所刪。原因是不容易了解，刪掉仍不改其意。

「轗軻」即「坎坷」。

「游詞」：「感物指事，理不外乎應酬。雖既雅而不豔，斯有句而無章。是謂游詞。」而「惡其游」則類似「不真心」。

「豈不爾思，室是遠而。」等見《論語‧子罕》的末章；子曰：「未之思也，夫何遠之有？」 另外寫法為 子曰：「未之思也夫，何遠之有！」。根據毛子水的「今譯」：「我難道不想念你；但是你家實在太遠了！」孔子說：「恐怕並沒有想念吧！(要是真的想念，)那(還會)有什麼遠！」

《胡適日記 1938-49》*是一本很重要的書，利用它的方式，可以多方面。這篇短文處理他在政治學的一篇重要的論文，Instrumentalism as a Political Concept《工具主義作為一政治概念》，的相關的研究。

在耿雲志的《胡適研究論稿‧胡適年譜 1891-1962》(北京社會科學文獻，2007，頁347)中，將杜威的生日和此篇，都寫成1940年10月20日，而這是錯誤的。我們根據《胡適日記 1938-49》，胡適1939年的10月18日寫短文Instrumentalism as a Political Concept，並在10月20日參加杜威的80歲生日慶生會。胡適在1940年再將它擴充為長文，發表在The Philosopher of the Common Man 論文集。這一篇有一譯文，參考《胡適研究‧第三輯》(合肥：安徽教育出版社，2001，頁497-508)。

由於這篇是胡先生從20年代就經常放在心的題目，他在上文出版之後再花一個月重寫 (按：我尚未讀過此稿)，在1940年9月19日的日記中詳說此事，當天他在賓州大學的Houston Hall 演講此改寫過的論文。隔天，他赴該校200年校慶，並接受名譽法學博士 L. L.D.。

*此套書將胡適的原文翻譯錯誤相當多

以他到賓大發表的演說中的president 和隔天受頒博士學位時的president 分別是兩人

不過都譯成校長 (p.408 v p.409) 讓賓大校長鬧雙胞....

赫胥黎/波茲曼

赫胥黎曾預言：一旦無人想讀書，無人想知道真理，一旦文化成為滑稽戲，文化就滅亡了。波茲曼認為，赫香黎的預言應驗了。這個結論也許太過悲嘆，我相信，只要人類精神存在一天，文化就決不會滅亡。不過，我無法否認，對於文化來說，一個娛樂至上的環境是最壞的環境。在這樣的環境中，任何嚴肅的精神活動都不被嚴肅地看待，人們不能容忍不是娛樂的文化，非把嚴肅化為娛樂不可；如果做不到，就幹脆把戲侮嚴肅當作一種娛樂。面對這樣的行徑，我的感覺是，波茲曼的書名聽起來像是詛咒。

privy/「廁或曰軒」

黃郁珺《十八世紀英國紳士的大旅遊》台北：唐山，2008

這本是輔仁大學的歷史所碩士論文的出版 (西洋史叢書的第二本)。還有很認真的學生在撰寫論文，並且有機會出版，是很可喜、可賀的事。論文處理的主題很重要和有趣，寫得也很用心。大旅遊的目的是教育，其實可能含蓋歐洲各名城和地方，所以我弄不清楚是否該包括希臘。無論如何，本書以義大利為主。

基本上，重要的英文和漢文文獻都提到了，似乎只有一夲書的書名前後不一：The Compleat Gentlemen (p.33) vs. The Complete Gentlemen (p.46) ；容易令人誤解的”public school” (現在多改稱為independent school)，作者用「公學」，而引張漢裕翻譯的《國富論》則採用錯誤的「公立學校」。不過這些是微不足道的小毛病。如果有索引，那就相當好了。

我只舉一小例說明作者的細心。118頁的注94中指出：「…..此處趙乾龍所譯歌德《意大利遊記》將privy 譯為「客房」，疑為「廁所」之誤植。…..」我們看哥德的上下文，知道英譯的屋外簡易廁所的privy ，比較合脈絡。妙的是，我查另外一本湖南文藝出版社(2006)的翻譯，也用「客房」。

這讓我想起吉川幸次郎的《漢武帝》中，引《漢書‧外戚傳》中說：衛子夫「於軒中得幸」。吉川先生引高木正一先生指出漢末的《釋名》說：「廁或曰軒」。

㈠ “華兒”：原文為“Kitty”，即“小貓”。這個譯名當是趙先生的發揮。
㈡ “炸脖×”：這裡，這首詩是倒著印的。詩裡的很多怪字都是趙先生生造的（因為原文中也有很多作者生造的字），全打不出，只好用×代替。以後，其中的一些字還會再出現，全都以×代替。 “炸脖×”的譯名，是採用了音譯，它的原文是“JABBERWOCKY”，這個由作者生造的詞後來被收進了英文辭典，意為“胡言亂語”。
“慪得格兒”、“佛盤劍”之類的譯名，也是採用了音譯。 “誅布誅布鳥”（Fubjub bird）是作者編造的一種怪物，原版插圖中有它的形象。全詩非常難懂，原文如下：

　手元に日本聖書教会の『舊新約聖書文語訳』*3があるんですが、Wikisourceにコリント前書のデータがありました。比較するのも面白いと思いますので、引用の範囲内として対応部分だけありがたく転載させていただきます。記述は日本聖書教会のものとまったく同じでした。お持ちの方は255頁を参照してください。

KJV（欽定訳聖書）の古英語も調べてみた

　キング・ジェームズ訳の聖書のテキストがネットにあったので、これもみてみました。驚いたのが、ἀγάπη〔アガペー〕の英文訳が love ではなく charity なんですよね。ラテン語訳だとcaritas〔カリタス〕。なるほど、確かにチャリティなら「性愛」とは区別しやすい。むしろ「慈善」と訳せるし、「隣人愛」に近づきますね。調べてみると面白いですね。

　KJVは、日本の聖書で言うところの文語訳に近い位置づけと考えるといいみたいで、もったいぶった英語を学ぶ際に結構役に立つと、どこかで聞いたことがあります。代わりに英辞郎で検索しても出てこない英語もあったりします。専用の辞書が必要ですね。

　それと、現代英語では bell と訳されているところが、ギリシャ語のκύμβαλον 〔クンバロン〕に近く cymbal となっています。なぜ現代英語で bell になったのか、これがよく分かりませんでした。あちらでシンバルってそんなにメジャーじゃないのかしら。

More, Thomas (1478–1535), martyr. Born in London, the son of Sir John More, barrister and judge, Thomas More at the age of thirteen joined the household of John Morton, archbishop of Canterbury (1486–1500), who sent him to Canterbury College, Oxford, where he stayed for only two years on a very restricted allowance from his father, who called him home. In 1496 he entered Lincoln's Inn and was called to the Bar in 1501. In 1504 he entered Parliament (his constituency is unknown). More's many‐sided personality, made up of intellectual sophistication and simple moral honesty, brilliance and receptivity, loyalty to his king and affection to his wife, friends, and children, was becoming known. Henry VIII, who became king in 1509, early recognized his worth and integrity; he promoted him to a whole series of public offices: Under‐Sheriff of London (1510), envoy to Flanders (1516), Privy Councillor and Master of Requests (1518), Speaker of the House of Commons (1523), High Steward of Oxford University (1524), High Steward of Cambridge University, and Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster (1525). Meanwhile his reputation as a man of letters and a wit was helped by his publications, the most notable of which was Utopia, written in Latin in 1516, but soon translated into the principal European languages. This is an ironical political essay describing a society in which there is no private property but where there is universal religious toleration and free education for both men and women. Other writings include his Life of John Picus (1510), History of Richard III (printed 1543, a pro‐Lancastrian tract later used by Shakespeare) and controversial works against Tyndale such as the Dialogue (1528), the Confutacyon of Tyndale's Answere (1528–32), and his own Apologye (1533). The language of the controversial works is often unpleasing to modern readers but was common currency in his time. So too is his pursuit of heretics whom he regarded as dangerous enemies of both Church and State.

A few weeks after the death of his first wife More married again. His second wife was a widow, Alice Middleton; she was an experienced housewife, full of common sense, and a good stepmother for his children. In 1523 he had undertaken a defence, written against Luther, of Henry VIII 's book on the Seven Sacraments, which had earned Henry the title of Defender of the Faith from the papacy. More wrote under the name Gulielmus Rosseus. In 1524 he moved to Chelsea, where his famous household was painted by Hans Holbein (c.1526). His cultured and delightful family life, which included the education of his daughters (especially Margaret Roper) to a level far surpassing that currently available to most women, was often commented on by contemporaries. Devotional elements included the reading of passages from Scripture at table and family prayers every night, but the general culture, fed in part by his early study of the classics and by a scientific curiosity which led him to keep unusual pets such as a monkey, was of a particularly high level and seasoned by More's wit. His realism about clerical scandals or superstition in some cults of saints was matched by his assessment of the king's favour for him: ‘If my head would win him a castle in France, it should not fail to go.’

In the late 1520s Henry (who used to visit More's house informally, arriving by barge) consulted him about the supposed invalidity of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. More first excused himself for lack of expert knowledge, but when pressed again made it clear that he did not share the king's opinion. This, however, did not prevent the king choosing him as Lord Chancellor in succession to Cardinal Wolsey in 1529. As judge he was famous for fairness, promptitude, and incorruptibility, which could not be said of many contemporaries in similar offices. But his tenure of office was too short to be profoundly influential on English history. He initiated, speaking for the king, the programme of the reform of the clergy, which had results even he would not have foreseen. But the cloud of doubt about Henry's marital plans hung over the friendship between More and the king, as did another caused by the king's plans to take to himself the powers over the Church of England held by the pope, according to traditional Christian belief the successor of St. Peter, prince of the Apostles. Only little by little did the king's intentions become clear. His imposition on the clergy of the acknowledgement of himself as ‘Protector and Supreme Head of the Church of England’ was accepted by Fisher and others only ‘so far as the law of Christ allows’. More at first wished to resign his office at this point, but was persuaded to accept the oath with JohnFisher's proviso. Further measures inhibiting the liberty of the clergy and refusing ‘firstfruits’ of bishoprics to the Holy See were opposed by More, but in vain. As the king's intentions became increasingly clear, More found his situation impossible and resigned the chancellorship.

The final crisis came over the Act of Succession with its inescapable implications. While the supposed nullity of Henry's marriage with Catherine of Aragon was still being decided at Rome, Henry married Anne Boleyn, who was then crowned Queen. More refused to attend her coronation. In 1534 the Act of Succession required the king's subjects to recognize the offspring of the marriage of Henry and Anne as successors to the throne; also that the union with Catherine of Aragon was no true marriage, but that the union with Anne was a true marriage and that the authority of any foreign prince or potentate should be repudiated. To the first part of the oath More was ready to agree, but he could not accept the other propositions, especially as only a little while before Clement VII had at last pronounced the marriage of Henry and Catherine to have been valid. Opposing the Act had been declared high treason, so after a second refusal More and John Fisher, bishop of Rochester, were committed to the Tower. This was on 13 April 1534. More was imprisoned for the remaining fifteen months of his life. Many efforts were made to induce him to conform but in vain; he forfeited all his lands and his family shared his poverty. In 1535 the Act of Supremacy which gave to the king the title ‘only supreme head of the Church in England’ came into force. John Houghton and the other London Carthusian monks were executed for ‘treason’ on 4 May and were watched by More on the way to their death. On 22 June, Fisher, More's friend and adviser, was beheaded on Tower Hill; on 1 July More, weak from illness and imprisonment, was tried in Westminster Hall. His defence was that his indictment was based directly on an Act of Parliament repugnant to the laws of God and the Church; that no temporal prince can presume by any law to take upon himself a spiritual pre‐eminence given by Christ to St. Peter and his successors in the See of Rome; that a particular country could no more make laws against the general law of the Church than the City of London could make a law against Parliament to bind the whole country; that the new title was contrary to the king's coronation oath. Further, although bishops and universities had agreed to this Act, More had not found in seven years' special study of the subject a single ancient writer or doctor that advocated the spiritual supremacy of any secular and temporal prince. In Christendom itself learned bishops and virtuous men still alive, not to mention the saints who were dead, agreed with More; therefore he was not obliged to prefer the council of one realm against the General Council of Christendom or one Parliament (‘God knows what manner of one’) to all the Councils made these thousand years. Nevertheless, he was condemned to death. Characteristically he then expressed the hope that he and his judges may ‘hereafter in heaven all meet merrily together, to our everlasting salvation’. A last affectionate meeting with his daughter Margaret followed on his way back to the Tower; she and other members of his family had taken the oath which he refused. He was executed on Tower Hill on 6 July, his last words being that he died for the faith of the Holy Catholic Church and was ‘the king's good servant, but God's first’.

Philip Marlowe is perhaps the most famous detective character and the leading icon of the "hard-boiled" school of mystery writing. The fictional creation of author Raymond Chandler, Philip Marlowe is a private detective with his own practice in Los Angeles (where Raymond Chandler himself had lived). Marlowe is a smart and tough lone wolf with a sense of honor: he won't take divorce cases, doesn't like being pushed around, amuses himself with old chess problems, and never gives up on a mystery. Marlowe appears in seven complete novels by Chandler, beginning with The Big Sleep (published 1939) and ending with Playback (1958). Various TV and radio series also featured the Philip Marlowe character, though they were not written by Chandler. A Marlowe novel left unfinished at Chandler's death, Poodle Springs, was finished by mystery writer Robert B. Parker and published in 1989.

大陸的簡體字有時候很糟糕，譬如說，本書提到『禮記』中的「餘韻餘味」，成為「余韻余味」（p.99）。

這本書翻譯者不懂日文，所以許多方面走調：譬如說，satori翻譯成「創造者」（p.98）。我在此說過：「……先了解 satori
這日文（它已成為西方語言）：さとり 0 【悟り/ ▽覚り】佛法上之「去迷妄、會通真理。開悟。菩提。覚。」用作者的說法是「頓悟」：「 a
satori: the Japanese word for "sudden illumination," "sudden
awakening" or simply "kick i:n the eye."」….」

更嚴重的在100-102頁的關鍵字anjisuru，日本漢字為「暗示……」，本書一直採用一奇怪的字眼「影射」…..

關於翻譯（《南腔北調集》）

今年是“國貨年”，除“美麥”（２）外，有些洋氣的都要被打倒了。四川雖然正在奉令剪掉路人的長衫，上海的一位慷慨家卻因為討厭洋服而記得了袍子和馬褂。翻譯也倒了運，得到一個籠統的頭銜是“硬譯”和“亂譯”。但據我所見，這些“批評家”中，一面要求著“好的翻譯”者，卻一個也沒有的。

創作對於自己人，的確要比翻譯切身，易解，然而一不小心，也容易發生“硬作”，“亂作”的毛病，而這毛病，卻比翻譯要壞得多。我們的文化落後，無可諱言，創作力當然也不及洋鬼子，作品的比較的薄弱，是勢所必至的，而且又不能不時時取法於外國。所以翻譯和創作，應該一同提倡，決不可壓抑了一面，使創作成為一時的驕子，反因容縱而脆弱起來。我還記得先前有一個排貨的年頭，國貨家販了外國的牙粉，搖鬆了兩瓶，裝作三瓶，貼上商標，算是國貨，而購買者卻多損失了三分之一；還有一種痱子藥水，模樣和洋貨完全相同，價錢卻便宜一半，然而它有一個大缺點，是搽了之後，毫無功效，於是購買者便完全損失了。

注重翻譯，以作借鏡，其實也就是催進和鼓勵著創作。但幾年以前，就有了攻擊“硬譯”的“批評家”，搔不他舊瘡疤上的末屑，少得像膏藥上的麝香一樣，因為少，就自以為是奇珍。而這風氣竟傳布開來了，許多新起的論者，今年都在開始輕薄著販來的洋貨。比起武人的大買飛機，市民的拚命捐款來，所謂“文人”也者，真是多麼昏庸的人物呵。

我要求中國有許多好的翻譯家，倘不能，就支持著“硬譯”。理由還在中國有許多讀者層，有著並不全是騙人的東西，也許總有人會多少吸收一點，比一張空盤較為有益。而且我自己是向來感謝著翻譯的，例如關於蕭的毀譽和現在正在提起的題材的積極性的問題（３），在洋貨裡，是早有了明確的解答的。關於前者，德國的尉特甫格（ＫａｒｌＷｉｔｔｖｏｇｅｌ）（４）在《蕭伯納是丑角》裡說過——“至於說到蕭氏是否有意於無產階級的革命，這並不是一個重要的問題。十八世紀的法國大哲學家們，也並不希望法國的大革命。雖然如此，然而他們都是引導著必至的社會變更的那種精神崩潰的重要勢力。”（劉大傑譯，《蕭伯納在上海》所載。）

關於後者，則恩格勒在給明那·考茨基（ＭｉｎｎａＫａｕｔｓｋｙ，就是現存的考茨基的母親）（５）的信裡，已有極明確的指示，對於現在的中國，也是很有意義的——“還有，在今日似的條件之下，小說是大抵對於布爾喬亞層的讀者的，所以，由我看來，只要正直地敘述出現實的相互關係，毀壞了罩在那上面的作偽的幻影，使布爾喬亞世界的樂觀主義動搖，使對於現存秩序的永遠的支配起疑，則社會主義的傾向的文學，也就十足地盡了它的使命了——即使作者在這時並未提出什麼特定的解決，或者有時連作者站在那一邊也不很明白。”（６）（日本上田進原譯，《思想》百三十四號所載。）

（２）“美麥”一九三三年五月，國民黨政府為了進行反共反人民的內戰，由財政部長宋子文和美國復興金融公司，在華盛頓簽訂了“棉麥借款”合同，規定借款五千萬美元，其中五分之一購買美麥，五分之四購買美棉。

（３）關於題材的積極性問題，當時曾有過討論，一九三三年八月《文學》第一卷第二號“社談”欄《文壇往何處去》一文就曾談到：“其次是'題材積極性' 的問題。現在很有些人以為描寫小資產階級生活的題材便沒有'積極性'，必須寫工農大眾的生活，這才是題材有積極性；又以為僅僅描寫大眾的生活痛苦或是僅僅描寫了他們怎樣被剝削被壓迫，也就不能說有積極性，必須寫他們鬥爭才好，而且須寫鬥爭得勝。究竟所謂'題材的積極性'是否應當這樣去理解呢，抑或別有理論？這也是當前問題的一個，亟待發展討論，俾創作者可資參考。”（４）尉特甫格（１８９６—？）德國作家，一九三三年遷居美國。他是中國問題研究者，著有《覺醒的中國》、《中國經濟研究》以及與人合著的《中國社會史——遼史》等。

　　（５）恩格勒即恩格斯。明那·考茨基（１８３７—１９１２），通譯敏娜·考茨基，德國社會民主黨人，女作家，著有小說《格里蘭霍夫的斯蒂凡》等。

（６）這裡所引恩格斯的話，現譯為：“此外，在當前條件下，小說主要是面向資產階級圈子裡的讀者，即不直接屬於我們的人的那個圈子裡的讀者，因此，如果一部具有社會主義傾向的小說通過對現實關係的真實描寫，來打破關於這些關係的流行的傳統幻想，動搖資產階級世界的樂觀主義，不可避免地引起對於現存事物的永世長存的懷疑，那末，即使作者沒有直接提出任何解決辦法，甚至作者有時並沒有明確地表明自己的立場，但我認為這部小說也完全完成了自己的使命。” （《馬克思恩格斯全集》第三十六卷第三八五頁，一九七四年十月人民出版社出版）。

翻譯的人照普通義亂翻成 "血腥恐怖"
這bloody在英國的歷史悠久讀者可參看諸如The New Oxford American Dictionary 等處的說明

再普通的辭典也有說明:

4. 基於上述原因，我已將惹您生氣的這些字數扣除：包括「前言」、「人名」、「生卒年月」、「生平記事」、「美術典籍的全段譯文」，這些譯文無法讓您滿意，因此退還這部分的金額，以供另尋更適當的譯者重譯。並請刪除我的上述譯文，勿再使用。

5. 努力了6個多月的原譯文總字數是97629（檔案共99093字，自行扣除每天日期標注的繕打4*366=1464字），譯稿費以千字600元計算，總共是58577元。我主動略去尾數，領得58500元。

6. 在刪除您不滿意的譯文段落以後，總字數為61779字，同樣扣除日期繕打1464字，餘下60315字，結算為36189元，差額是22311元（58500-36189）。我再添補1689元做為幾小段日文詩歌的繕打費。

關於此書的譯稿
我認為應該採取直譯不多 (不加生卒年等他種曆法完全按照原書簡潔作法不要像在'慧能'等部分'自作主張添加-重寫....) 不少 (致謝部分菶) 日文詩補原文再給我檔案
這些都做好之後才算結案

注意我的這些看法很認真請不要將自己的學習與"譯"混在一起
目前的稿件我還需花太多功夫還原和加工 (如昨天說的塞尚 manet 等簡單順手改的沒什麼樂意作) 所以建議你一個月之內給我直譯稿

至於原作如有可改善的 "我們"分別作文討論

值得注意的是The World of Yesterdayby Stefan Zweig

在英國流亡幾年幾乎只記H. G. Wells和B. Shaw 的一場口頭辯論

台北去年又出版斯蒂芬．茨威格（ Stefan Zweig）的回憶錄『昨日世界』（　Die Welt Von Gestern ）（譯者：史行果，台北：邊城出版，2005 ）

這本書沒索引，所以無買，因為大陸版有兩本：

Stefan Zweig 《昨日的世界：一個歐洲人回憶》（舒昌善等譯，北京：三聯出版社，1991 ）

這一歐洲文豪 Stefan Zweig，著作達數十本，似乎一半以上是暢銷書。最近，還一直與他的話語和著作不期而遇：（約 40年前，他的「一位陌生女子的來信」似乎震盪全台灣的喜愛文學的朋友……. ）

此書對於莎士比亞的引詞至少有二處書前語從德文再回譯有點失真:

因為工作需要，最近常會翻閱一些李維斯陀的二手著作。一本是「列維-斯特勞斯傳」（人民大學），厚近六百頁，係按法文原文譯出。其中提到俄國革命家victor serge。此君明明是個男人，譯文卻有這樣的話：「還有列寧的女友victor serge，她給列維-斯特勞斯留下深刻印象，儘管這個「恪守原則的老姑娘」的小心謹慎讓他反感」。我不是認為這是不可原諒的錯譯，而是覺得它是你我都同意的一點的又一例證：漢人要通（不是精）英語以外的外語戛戛乎難。

Translations

There are two primary sources for the translations based on the two German editions. The earliest English translations were by Edwin and Willa Muir and published by Alfred A. Knopf. These editions were widely published and spurred the late-1940s surge in Kafka's popularity in the United States. Later editions (notably the 1954 editions) had the addition of the deleted text translated by Eithne Wilkins and Ernst Kaiser. These are known as "Definitive Editions." They translated both The Trial, Definitive and The Castle, Definitive among other writings. Definitive Editions are generally accepted to have a number of biases and to be dated in interpretation.

After Pasley and Schillemeit completed their recompilation of the German text, the new translations were completed and published – The Castle, Critical by Mark Harman (Schocken Books, 1998), The Trial, Critical by Breon Mitchell (Schocken Books, 1998) and Amerika: The Man Who Disappeared by Michael Hoffman (New Directions Publishing, 2004). These editions are often noted as being based on the restored text.

Muir, Edwin, 1887-1959, British author, b. Orkney Islands, Scotland. He moved with his family to Glasgow in 1901, where he remained for 18 years. In 1919 he went to London and joined the staff on the New Age. During the early 1920s he traveled on the Continent, supporting himself chiefly with contributions to the Freeman. At the age of 35 he turned to writing poetry, producing such collections as Chorus of the Newly Dead (1926) and The Labyrinth (1949). However, it was not until his Collected Poems appeared in 1952 that Muir achieved recognition. A visionary poet, he sought in his personal, often dreamlike verse to understand the meaning of the spiritual universe. Muir is also well known as a literary critic. Included among his critical writings are The Structure of the Novel (1928), The Present Age, from 1914 (1939), and Essays on Literature and Society (1949). His other works include translations of Kafka; three novels, The Marionette (1927), The Three Brothers (1931), and Poor Tom (1932); and an excellent autobiography, The Story and the Fable (1940), which later appeared in an enlarged edition, An Autobiography (1954).

最近幾天補讀永安翻譯的 The Vicar’s Garden and Other Stories by D. H. Lawrence

台灣的出版社或為銷路，故意用書中一篇《密愛》當書名，其實我初看此兩字，根本無法想像原篇的英文……

DHL 的文字，就是那麼不同，或許，所有的翻譯都無法取代原文。連書名都無法認真翻譯…..

譬如說，A Sort of Life by Graham Greene*

這種說法，是英國人歷盡滄桑或玩世不恭的說法

譬如說；

“ Well, what a man to do? It’s no sort of life for a man of my years, to sit at my own hearth like a stranger….”ODOUR OF CHRYSANTHEMUMS by D. H. Lawrence

這本口袋型書是本簡單的「美國文明論」(章名：主編的話-譯序；緒論；幾種類型的解說；活力論；個人主義；資政；擴張主義；結論譯名索引)，當然值得翻譯。它的正文(含注)才138頁，另有5頁索引 (粗糙，譬如說注有引艾森豪總統的話，無此索引)。不過這是本錯誤相當多的書。推測原因是譯者對美國史很陌生，以及他對人名處理大而化之，通常只譯/寫姓；出版社無審稿制和索引編輯人；…..

人名注解錯誤至少有：德國社會學家Max Weber 弄成藝術家 (索引中的113頁無此人) ；兩位羅斯福總統搞混 ( T. Roosevelt 又名 FDR，第35頁；FDR出現在頁69，索引全弄混。同樣的，書中泰勒至少兩人，內文和索引都弄混…..) 。J. Q. Adams是美國第8任總統，不是第6任。

2005年10月，住處前臺灣大學網球場邊樹立一棟建築物「新月台」。我無法原諒它但求立面工整 (裏面有一家原叫 NTU FancyLand的，隔間等真是慘不忍睹；又，砍一棵樹為夜間照明。

這棟的公共藝術是一牆化工材織物，由九個校景一瞥所構成。它說拜科技之賜，現在可以將景色合成、織成。

大概很少人注意版權版上還有一首中英對照的詩歌。讓我無法思解的是，這首可能是創作詩嗎？我記憶中的詩是這樣，標點和幾處可能有錯，而我認為或許意思到了就好、漢文版和英文版都是如是觀。遺憾的是沒記下作者。
