Big Fat Lies

abandon

《中英對照讀新聞》Monday blues are a myth, say academics 學者說星期一憂鬱是迷思

It is a myth that we are at our most miserable at the beginning of the week, according to academics. People’s moods on Mondays are actually no worse than on any other week day barring Friday, a survey found.
The popular fixation on the idea of "Blue Monday" should be given the status of a "cultural myth", the team behind the new findings wrote in the Journal of Positive Psychology.
"Despite our global beliefs about lousy Mondays, we conclude that this belief should be abandoned," said lead researcher Prof Arthur Stone, of Stony Brook University in New York state.
Prof Stone and colleagues analysed data collected by Gallup from more than 340,000 American citizens in telephone interviews.
The respondents were asked whether or not they had felt enjoyment, happiness, worry, sadness, stress and anger during much of the previous day.
Not surprisingly, the results showed that people reported far more positive feelings and fewer negative feelings on Saturdays and Sundays compared with week days.
"The perception of Blue Mondays is likely prevalent due to the extreme contrast in mood from Sunday to Monday, even though there is no real difference in mood with Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday", said Stone.

sentiments vs emotional

Journals 1889-1949 by Andre Gide, London: Penguin Books, pp.87-88, Paris , 8 August, 1905

'The sensation is always sincere; it is the only guarantee of the authenticity of our sentiments;our sentiments are guaranteed by their physiological repercussions. Literature and fine arts ( in modern times)  have, for their own convenience, made man a much more emotional creature than he is, or than he was at least, for very soon man began to conform to the image that he was offered of himself.'

It is odd how the stock of Humanity has risen on the market since the Greek, or even since Shakespeare. Nothing does more harm to drama than this excessive evaluation.

The Quick and the Dead is an English phrase originating in the Christian Bible and popularized by the Apostles' Creed, one of the earliest statements of faith in the Christian religion and still one of the most widely used in worship.
The phrase is found in three passages in the King James version of the Bible: in the Acts of the Apostles, (Acts 10:42),Paul's letters to Timothy (2 Timothy 4:1) and also in the First Epistle of Peter, which reads

  • For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries: Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you: Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.
  • 1 Peter 4:3–5
  • 由於你們不再同他們狂奔於淫蕩的洪流中,他們便引以為怪,遂誹謗你們;
  •  the quick and the dead, suffice, lasciviousness,

  • 1 Peter 4:3-5

    New King James Version (NKJV)
For we have spent enough of our past lifetime[a] in doing the will of the Gentiles—when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries. In regard to these, they think it strange that you do not run with them in the same flood of dissipation, speaking evil of you. They will give an account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.

    1 Peter 4:3-5

    New International Version (NIV)
For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do—living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry. They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you. But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.

The Sense of An Ending

Rothko wanted only that his canvases make people cry  《羅斯科傳》Mark Rothko, A Biography
Sweetness and light - Wikipedia,
